Media personality Morayo Afolabi-Brown has opened up about the early years of her marriage, revealing that her husband was unemployed when they got married and she handled the family’s finances during their first few years together.
Speaking at Kayhikersclub, Afolabi-Brown argued that financial provision should not be the sole measure of a man’s worth or position in a marriage.
“Money is important, but that’s not what makes your husband a husband. It’s the ability to lead,” she said.
The media personality explained that despite being responsible for the family’s finances at the time, she never viewed her husband as less of a man because he did not have a job.
“The first few years, I was doing everything. But you would never know. Not because of what I did, but because of how he carried himself,” she said.
According to Afolabi-Brown, her husband remained actively involved in their home and showed interest in her work and wellbeing. She recalled how he would pray for her before she left home and participate in decisions concerning their household.
“When it comes to the house, he takes decisions, we discuss. So even though things are not financially, I still respected him because he was a man’s man,” she added.
She maintained that leadership, responsibility and the confidence a man inspires in his family are qualities women also value in marriage.
“What is good is good, but that leadership, I believe in you. It’s important to us,” she said.
Her comments have sparked conversations about the role of financial provision, leadership and partnership in modern marriages, particularly at a time when financial expectations are often placed at the centre of discussions about relationships.
