American singer Mary J. Blige has opened up about her decision not to have children, revealing that her views on motherhood were shaped by watching family members struggle while raising their children.

Speaking on the Michelle Obama Podcast, Blige said she was determined not to have children when she was younger after witnessing relatives sacrifice their freedom and personal choices for parenthood.

“I said a lot of things when I was younger that I didn’t want to have kids,” she said.

According to the singer, seeing members of her family struggle and feeling that they had little control over their lives influenced her decision at the time.

“When I was young, I saw a lot of people struggling, even my family members; they had no choice, no freedom. So when I was younger, I saw all of that, and I said I don’t want to have any kids,” she explained.

However, Blige said her perspective gradually changed as she grew older and began to appreciate the bond between parents and their children.

“As I got older, I started to see how valuable they are to them,” she said.

Despite gaining a different understanding of parenthood, the singer maintained that people should not pressure themselves into following another person’s path in life.

“Don’t make yourself miserable trying to have what someone else has. That’s their life. You have yours,” Blige said.

Her comments have sparked conversations about societal expectations around marriage and parenthood, with many applauding her for encouraging people to make personal decisions based on their own circumstances rather than external pressure.
