The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Monday, 1 June 2026, over the continued captivity of teachers and pupils abducted in the Oriire area of the state.
The directive, issued by the national leadership of the union and confirmed by the Oyo State chapter, effectively grounds academic activities in public schools across the state until further notice.
The union said the action became necessary following the prolonged detention of the kidnapped teachers and pupils, whose rescue and safe return remain uncertain despite ongoing efforts by security agencies and government authorities.
According to the NUT, the disturbing development has created widespread fear and anxiety among teachers, while also discouraging many parents from sending their children to school amid growing concerns over safety and security.
The union noted that the industrial action is intended to draw urgent attention to the plight of the abducted victims and compel relevant authorities to intensify efforts towards securing their unconditional release.
It stressed that the continued captivity of the victims has heightened tension in affected communities and raised serious concerns about the safety of teachers and learners in schools.
The NUT therefore directed all public school teachers in the state to fully comply with the strike order, remain peaceful and law-abiding, and stay away from their duty posts throughout the duration of the action.
The union also reaffirmed its solidarity with the abducted teachers, pupils, and their families, assuring them that it would continue to engage appropriate authorities and stakeholders until the victims regain their freedom.
While expressing concern over the security situation, the teachers’ body reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare, safety, and professional interests of its members as well as ensuring a secure learning environment for pupils across the country.
