Sometimes, not every sermon is meant for the internet, but once it gets there, it takes on a life of its own. Over the weekend, David Oyedepo Jnr, son of David Oyedepo, found himself at the centre of an online conversation after a brief testimony during his sermon made its way to social media.

In the two-minute clip, the pastor shared a personal story about his wife, who had spent a significant part of her life in the United States and was close to obtaining her Green Card. According to him, she chose to walk away from that opportunity to return to Nigeria with him, embracing what he described as their primary assignment in ministry.

To him, it was a story of sacrifice. To many Nigerians online, it was something else entirely. He noted that this was what many Nigerians would kill to get or even forfeit their marriage to own, sacrificing their destiny, their future on the altar of a green card.

In a country where relocation is often seen as a pathway to stability, the idea of turning down a Green Card struck a nerve. For some, it sounded admirable. For others, it felt unrealistic, even tone deaf.

As expected, the reactions did not hold back. Whether the message was meant to inspire or simply to share a personal journey, one thing is clear.
