Flying Eagles Fail to Secure U20 AFCON Qualification After 4-1 Thumping by Burkina Faso

Seven-time winners of the U-20 AFCON, Nigeria, on Sunday failed to secure a place in the 2027 Africa U-20 Africa Championship after suffering a 4-1 thrashing by Burkina Faso’s Young Stallions in the final of the WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.
Nigeria went into the final hoping to get revenge after Burkina Faso had already beaten them 2-0 in the group stage. But the Young Stallions produced another strong performance when it mattered most, scoring three goals in the first 15 minutes.
The Flying Eagles were unable to deal with Burkina Faso’s fast start. The Young Stallions attacked with confidence and quickly found gaps in the Nigerian defence.
Three goals arrived in the opening 15 minutes, leaving Nigeria with a huge mountain to climb. The early damage put Burkina Faso firmly in control and gave Nigeria little chance to settle into the game.
The Nigerian team, led by coach Abdu Maikaba, tried to respond but could not find a way back into the contest before the break.
The defeat was a major disappointment for Nigeria because the final was not only about winning the WAFU Zone B title. The winner also secured the region’s place at the 2027 U-20 AFCON alongside hosts Ghana.
Nigeria had reached the final after a dramatic semi-final against Côte d’Ivoire. The Flying Eagles drew 2-2 before winning 4-3 on penalties to book their place in the final.
Burkina Faso, meanwhile, reached the final without losing a match. They defeated Niger 2-0 in their semi-final and carried that confidence into the championship decider.
However, the victory completed a memorable tournament for the Young Stallions and confirmed them as WAFU Zone B champions.
On the other hand the Flying Eagles loss capped a miserable night for Nigeria whose senior women team were beaten 1-0 by Cameroon in the quarter-final of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
