Speaking during an interview, Amaka revealed that she married her husband in June, but just three months later became concerned after missing her menstrual cycle. A hospital visit later confirmed she had PCOS, a hormonal condition that can affect fertility and cause physical changes.

“I just got married to my husband in June. Three months into the marriage, I didn’t see my period. Then I went to the hospital, they told me I had PCOS,” she recalled.

According to Amaka, the condition led to noticeable weight gain and changes in her body, exposing her to hurtful comments and ridicule from people around her.

“I started having upper body structure. Then I started adding weight. When my husband and I stand together, I looked way older. I was told I am the man of the house, that I beat my husband,” she said.

She disclosed that while the remarks about her appearance were painful, the comments directed at her husband affected her the most.

“What made me cry was when they said my husband is not man enough to father a child. In my head, I’m like, all this because I’ve never conceived,” she said.

Amaka’s story has resonated with many Nigerians online, with several women sharing similar experiences of living with PCOS and the social pressure surrounding fertility in marriage. Others have called for greater awareness of the condition and urged the public to show empathy toward couples facing fertility challenges rather than subjecting them to stigma and insensitive remarks.
