Isreal DMW, an associate of Afrobeats star Davido, has paid tribute to former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, praising his handling of the September 2024 Edo State governorship election amid renewed debate over the poll.

The tribute surfaced on the same day that Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, admitted that he worked against Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the election.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting of the Rainbow Coalition in Abuja, Wike said political alliances involving figures from the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) helped prevent former Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki from installing a preferred successor.

In his tribute, Isreal DMW praised Buhari for allowing Edo residents to determine their political future during the election, contrasting what he described as the electoral climate under the former president with developments since Buhari left office.

The September 2024 election saw APC candidate Monday Okpebholo defeat Ighodalo, bringing an end to Obaseki’s administration and its influence over the state’s political direction.

Wike’s admission has renewed attention on the political manoeuvres and alliances surrounding the contest, particularly the role played by party figures who worked across political lines.

Isreal DMW’s tribute adds another voice to the discussion, with his remarks drawing a comparison between Buhari’s record during the election and the conduct of politics in the period that followed.
