The National Sports Commission (NSC) has invited Gombe State to participate in the forthcoming National Intermediate Games, scheduled to hold in Lagos State from October 1 to 15, 2026.
The invitation, contained in a letter to Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya and signed by the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, commended the State’s longstanding support and contributions to sports development in Nigeria.
According to the letter, the National Intermediate Games are designed to advance grassroots sports development, promote talent identification, and encourage national integration among young Nigerians aged 16 to 19. The Commission described the Games as a strategic initiative to bridge the gap between grassroots talent discovery and Nigeria’s elite sports development structures.
Athletes are expected to compete across 29 approved sports, including athletics, football, basketball, boxing, chess, cycling, gymnastics, handball, judo, karate, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, wrestling, and weightlifting, among others.
The letter noted that participating states are required to provide adequate insurance coverage for all athletes and officials, while a participation fee of Thirty Thousand Naira (N30,000) is payable for each duly registered participant.
Ahead of the main event, the Commission’s North-East Zone IV office in Bauchi has also invited Gombe State to take part in the Zonal Team Sports Elimination, scheduled for September 9 to 12, 2026, in Damaturu, Yobe State.
The zonal qualifiers will feature team sports including football, basketball, handball, volleyball, beach volleyball, hockey, cricket, rugby, and Abula, with athletes to be accommodated at the August 27 Stadium and Federal Polytechnic, Damaturu.
The Gombe State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has already commenced preparations to ensure Gombe State’s participation in the national event.
