The Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF), in partnership with the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), has launched a training programme for Physical and Health Education teachers in Kano State.
The initiative, unveiled on Tuesday, is aimed at strengthening grassroots sports development and improving sports education in secondary schools across the state.
President of the federation, Olabisi Joseph, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists in Lagos on Tuesday.
Joseph said the programme was sponsored by Olympic Solidarity and followed similar successful training sessions earlier held in Ogun and Plateau.
She said more than 100 Physical and Health Education teachers were participating in the training at Government Girls College, Dala, Kano State.
According to her, participants are being exposed to modern coaching techniques, sports science, talent identification, and Olympic Values Education.
Joseph explained that the Olympic Values Education Programme, developed by the International Olympic Committee, promotes excellence, friendship and respect.
She said the programme also integrates classroom learning with sporting activities to build character and encourage healthy competition among students.
Joseph described the initiative as more than a workshop, calling it a strategic investment in Nigeria’s sporting future.
She said: “Everything starts from school. If we want Nigeria to produce world-class athletes, we must start with world-class teachers.
“This programme empowers teachers to nurture young talent, build character, and create engaging sports strategies that inspire students and foster excellence.”
She thanked the Habu Gumel-led NOC and the committee for supporting the project.
Joseph also appreciated the government and people of Kano State for hosting the training programme.
IOC-certified expert, Abiodun Morofolu, is serving as the lead resource person.
The committee’s OVEP Programme Coordinator, Kemi Obidahunsi, urged participants to apply the knowledge gained.
She also encouraged them to update their professional skills regularly to better influence students and support talent development.
Organisers said the Kano seminar forms part of a nationwide effort to transform school sports delivery.
