A coalition of youths in Yobe State has raised a staggering N188 million to push former Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, into the 2027 governorship race.
The fundraising drive, spearheaded by the Coalition of Yobe-East Progressive Youths, was unveiled on Monday in Damaturu, with organisers describing it as a bold move to draft Lawan into the state’s top job.
Leader of the coalition, Dr. Yerima Goni, said the funds were mobilised through pledges, bank transfers, and cash donations, reflecting what he called a groundswell of youth-driven political engagement.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at deepening civic participation and ensuring that young people and other stakeholders play a decisive role in shaping Yobe’s political future.
The event drew a large crowd of supporters, including youths, community leaders, and political stakeholders from across the state, underscoring growing momentum behind the push.
Responding, Lawan expressed appreciation for the gesture, describing it as a powerful demonstration of responsible citizenship and grassroots enthusiasm.
He noted that the donations reflect a deep, popular desire for inclusive leadership and participatory governance in the state.
Although the former Senate President has yet to formally declare his intention to contest, he hinted at a possible bid, saying he would not ignore the call to serve.
The development is already stirring political calculations in Yobe, as the N188 million war chest signals an early and potentially formidable mobilisation ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
