Woods Incident Puts Golf’s Dependence on Star Under Scrutiny

Tiger Woods’ latest car crash has reignited questions about golf’s long-standing reliance on its biggest star, both on and off the course.

For nearly two decades, Woods has remained central to the sport’s direction despite repeated off-course incidents, from the 2009 scandal to a 2017 driving conviction and a serious 2021 crash. His latest accident on Florida’s Jupiter Island, which could lead to charges including driving under the influence and property damage, again puts his future under scrutiny.

Beyond his playing career, Woods holds significant influence. He sits on the PGA Tour Policy Board, serves as vice-chairman of PGA Tour Enterprises, and has shaped key initiatives, from course design projects to competition structures. The tour has even adjusted eligibility rules to keep him in marquee events despite limited recent play.

That dependence is now being questioned. With decisions looming on the tour’s future structure and Ryder Cup leadership, uncertainty over Woods’ availability comes at a critical time.

While his achievements, including 15 major titles, are unmatched, critics argue that competitive greatness does not necessarily translate into governance or strategic leadership.

As golf looks ahead, Woods’ latest setback may force officials to reconsider whether the sport can, or should, continue to lean so heavily on one figure.
