Spain Dominate FIFA Awards as Messi’s Fairytale Ends in Tears

Spain were crowned FIFA World Cup 2026 champions on Sunday after an inspired extra-time performance ended Lionel Messi’s quest for a storybook farewell, with Ferran Torres firing La Roja to a dramatic 1-0 victory over defending champions Argentina at a packed MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Torres became Spain’s national hero when he smashed home the decisive goal in the 106th minute after a brilliant headed assist from Nico Williams, capping a night of Spanish dominance and heartbreak for Argentina’s iconic captain, Messi, who was widely expected to be making his final appearance on football’s biggest stage.

Before a capacity crowd of 80,663 spectators, including United States President Donald Trump and a host of global celebrities, Spain controlled virtually every aspect of the final, pinning Argentina deep inside their own half and preventing the reigning champions from registering a single shot on target throughout the entire 120 minutes.

For Messi, now 39, it was a painful ending to one of football’s most glittering careers. Having inspired Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar four years earlier, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was unable to influence the contest as Spain’s energetic midfield and relentless pressing denied him space and opportunities.

Argentina’s frustrations boiled over repeatedly during an ill-tempered contest marked by reckless challenges and repeated confrontations.

Alexis Mac Allister escaped an early booking after a dangerous studs-up tackle on Dani Olmo, while Spain’s Alex Baena also avoided punishment after catching Messi with an elbow moments later. Nicolas Tagliafico was fortunate not to receive a yellow card for a heavy challenge on teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

The first caution eventually went to Lisandro Martinez for hauling down Mikel Oyarzabal before the defender was forced off through injury and replaced by veteran Nicolas Otamendi.

Spain continued to dictate proceedings but struggled to break down Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who produced a string of outstanding saves to keep his side alive.

The final’s lavish halftime entertainment, featuring global music stars Madonna, Shakira and Justin Bieber, stretched to an unusual 27 minutes but failed to disrupt Spain’s momentum.

Spain resumed after the break with even greater intensity.

Coach Luis de la Fuente introduced Pedri and Ferran Torres to inject fresh attacking energy, while Yamal tormented the Argentine defence with his dazzling dribbles and dangerous deliveries.

Martinez denied Torres with a superb save from a powerful header before keeping out fierce efforts from Pedri and Pau Cubarsí as Spain laid siege to Argentina’s goal.

Fresh legs from substitutes Nico Williams and Mikel Merino added further urgency to Spain’s relentless attacks.

Argentina’s discipline deteriorated further late in normal time. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez was first booked for dissent before being sent off in stoppage time after a reckless challenge on Cubarsi, forcing the South Americans to finish with 10 men.

Despite their numerical advantage, Spain thought they had finally scored early in extra time when Williams found the net, only for Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic to disallow the effort for a marginal foul on Otamendi.

The setback proved only temporary.

Moments later, Pedro Porro floated an inviting cross to the far post where Williams brilliantly nodded the ball into Torres’ path. The Barcelona striker responded with an unstoppable first-time finish that finally beat Martinez and sent Spain’s players, coaches, and supporters into wild celebration.

Argentina launched one desperate final assault in the closing minutes, but Spain’s defence remained resolute to secure a famous victory.

The triumph delivered Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title, 16 years after their historic maiden success in South Africa in 2010, and confirmed the arrival of a new golden generation led by Yamal, Williams, Cubarsi, and Torres.

Spain’s glorious campaign was further underlined during the post-match awards ceremony as La Roja swept most of FIFA’s top individual honours.

Midfield maestro Rodri was named winner of the prestigious adidas Golden Ball after orchestrating Spain’s march to the title with a series of commanding displays throughout the tournament.

Goalkeeper Unai Simon, who conceded only one goal in eight matches and kept seven clean sheets—including another shutout in the final against Argentina—received the adidas Golden Glove Award as the tournament’s outstanding goalkeeper.

Teenage defensive sensation Pau Cubarsí capped a breakthrough World Cup by winning the FIFA Best Young Player Award, presented by Aramco, after emerging as a cornerstone of a Spanish defence that conceded just once in the entire competition.

Although denied a second consecutive World Cup triumph, Messi did not leave empty-handed. The Argentine legend collected the adidas Silver Ball as the tournament’s second-best player and the adidas Silver Boot after another prolific scoring campaign.

France captain Kylian Mbappé emerged as the tournament’s leading marksman, claiming the adidas Golden Boot with a remarkable 10 goals in eight matches despite Les Bleus falling short of a third successive World Cup final. Mbappé also received the adidas Bronze Ball for his overall performances.

England midfielder Jude Bellingham finished with the adidas Bronze Boot, while the Netherlands were honoured with the FIFA Fair Play Trophy, presented by McDonald’s, in recognition of their exemplary discipline throughout the tournament.
