Popular Nollywood actor Daniel Etim Effiong has once again found himself in the centre of public debate, this time over comments made during a podcast conversation with Eso Dike.

During the discussion in a video clip that made the rounds yesterday, Eso posed a rather delicate question. Was the love Daniel feels for his wife the highest form of love he experiences outside the love for his children? Daniel’s answer was confident and immediate. He loves his wife even more than the children.

That alone was enough to raise eyebrows. Yet the actor continued, explaining that he is deeply in love with his wife and that their relationship is built on partnership, almost like an enterprise. A rather corporate description for what many imagine to be a tender love story.

Just when listeners thought the moment could not become more interesting, Daniel added that he sometimes feels attracted to other people. Attraction, he explained, does not equal love. Love, according to him, belongs solely to his wife.

Of course, social media did what social media does best. Keyboard warriors quickly marched into the comment sections, accusing the actor of disrespecting his wife.

For followers of Daniel and his wife Toyosi Etim Effiong, controversial marital commentary is hardly new. The couple has built a reputation for sharing opinions about their marriage that often leave the internet debating.

At this point one might gently suggest, Daniel, perhaps a brief holiday from microphones might do everyone some good.
