The Chairman of Agege Local Government in Lagos State, Mr Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, has flagged off the installation of solar-powered street lights across key and strategic places within the council area.
Speaking during the inauguration of the project, Obasa said that lighting up the streets was not just for visibility but to also help secure the community.
According to him, the initiative is a forward-thinking effort that reinforces Agege’s urban renewal and public safety agenda.
“The initiative will begin with eight strategic roads, forming a pilot phase tagged as a proof of concept.
“The plan is to gradually extend the project to all neigbourhoods across Agege to avoid darkness at night,” he said.
The council boss added that the projects would be starting from Adeliyi St. as a model, then later extended to other areas in the community for better illumination, improved safety and vibrant atmosphere for residents.
He said that the solar street light project was an integral component of the council’s broader urban renewal and environmental improvement plan.
He added that his administration would embrace renewable and energy efficient innovations that advance grassroots development and environmental responsibility
One of the residents, Mr Ayo Olayinka, expressed gratitude and excitement, saying that the solar lighting project would significantly improve security, mobility and night life in the community.
Olayinka said that the development would sought to embed modern technology into local infrastructure while promoting community welfare.
“Traders, motorists and pedestrians will benefit from the improved visibility and foster safer and vibrant evening activities,” he said.
Another resident, Mariam Adebajo, said that the project was timely and people focused.
“Before now, some of our streets were poorly lit and that made people uneasy at night, with this solar light, we now feel safe and more confident moving around at night,” she said.
Similarly, Femi Ajeigbe, a resident, hailed the initiative, saying that the development was reflecting an administration that combined innovation, inclusion and sustainability.
Ajeigbe said that the Obasa-led administration was positioning Agege as a progressive urban hub aligned with global standards of environmental consciousness.
Obasa had recently convened a strategic meeting with market leaders to discuss peace, security, communal harmony, and cleanliness.
Obasa, during the meeting, reiterated that peace, security, cleaniness and healthcare development remain core pillars of the progressive transformation of the area.
According to him, the dialogue will provide a platfom to strengthen local security,” he said.
