The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has reiterated its commitment to enhancing financial literacy and saving habits among secondary school students in Sokoto State.

The Zonal Controller of NDIC in Sokoto, Mr Bello Usman-Kaoje, made this known yesterday during a training programme held at Government Day Secondary School, Kalambaina.

The event brought together students from various schools as part of the corporation’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative aimed at promoting financial discipline and a culture of saving.

Usman-Kaoje said the training was organised in commemoration of the 2025 Financial Literacy Day, with the theme: “Think Before You Follow, Spend Money Wisely Tomorrow.”

According to him, the NDIC seeks to use such programmes to equip secondary school students with knowledge on how to generate, save, and spend money wisely.

“NDIC has been mentoring secondary school students on the benefits of efficient saving and money management.

“The goal is to encourage financial prudence, proper budgeting, and effective money management.

“It also aims to boost investment growth in the national economy through financial literacy, resource management, and a strong saving culture,” he said.

He also warned students to be cautious of financial frauds, especially those occurring through online banking platforms and Point-of-Sale (POS) operators, which he attributed to greed and the desire for quick gains.

In his remarks, an official from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sokoto branch, Mr Abubakar Usman, reminded students that commercial and microfinance banks operated under strict regulations designed to protect deposits and ensure secure financial transactions.

Also speaking, Mr Aliyu Omama, a Deputy Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Sokoto State Command, cautioned students against drug abuse and its connection to financial and social risks.

Speaking on behalf of the school principals, Hajiya Mansura Abdulsalam, described the event as timely and impactful. (NAN)
