The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has denied allegations circulating on social media that it was indebted to the late Christian Chukwu, a former captain and coach of the Super Eagles, who passed away on Saturday.
The social media claims suggested that the football body owed Chukwu a sum of $128,000. Reacting to the reports, the NFF’s General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, dismissed the allegations as false and baseless.
“There is no record in the NFF of any outstanding indebtedness to ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu,” Dr. Sanusi stated firmly. “During the first term of the Board headed by Mr. Amaju Pinnick, a committee was set up to diligently peruse the papers of coaches who were being owed, even from previous NFF administrations.”
According to Sanusi, the committee’s mandate was to verify and settle all outstanding debts to coaches, ensuring no case was left unresolved. He confirmed that Chukwu, fondly referred to as “Chairman,” worked with the NFF between 2002 and 2005 before he was relieved of his duties after Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Angola in a World Cup qualifier held in Kano.
“I am aware that ‘Chairman’ was in the employ of the NFF between 2002 and 2005, before he was relieved of the post following the 1-1 draw with Angola in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Kano in August 2005,” Sanusi added. “There is certainly no record of indebtedness to him in the NFF.”
