A member of the Edo House of Assembly, representing Akoko-Edo I, Mr Yekini Idaiye, has explained the reasons for his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) to the ruling All Progress Party (APC).

According to the Assembly man, his defection was motivated by the desire to facilitate greater developmental initiatives in the region.

Speaking in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday in Benin, Idaiye lamented that Akoko-Edo had been lagging behind in infrastructural development.

He noted that aligning with the ruling party would provide him with the opportunity to attract developmental projects to his constituency.

“The APC has always been my home—this feels like a homecoming for me. I returned to the APC for the good of my people,” he said.

The legislator, expressing concern over the poor state of some infrastructure in the constituency, noted that aligning with the state government would fast-track development.

“Many communities in my constituency do not have good roads, particularly my own community, Somorika.

“If working with the ruling government will facilitate development in the area, why should I not join the party? asked rhetorically.

After serving as a commissioner for two years and my sixth year in the House of Assembly, I believe I know how best to attract the government’s presence to my constituency,” he said.

Idaiye stated  he had initiated several constituency projects,  including construction and renovation of classrooms in some communities in his constituency.

“I am currently building a three-classroom block in a community where there was no primary school and the  children there trek long distances to community to attain education.

“I  connected electricity to new areas and provided boreholes to over 10 communities within the constituency,” he added.
