NBBF Presidential Candidate Abdullahi Pledges Grassroots Basketball Development, Players’ Welfare

Abdullahi Mustapha, a candidate for the presidency of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), has pledged to prioritise grassroots development, talent discovery, infrastructure and players’ welfare if elected.
Abdullahi, who is the Director-General, Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), made the pledge in an interview with journalists on Wednesday.
He said his interest in basketball began during his playing days in Kano State and later developed into supporting the growth of the sport.
“My relationship with basketball did not begin with public office.
“It started from my participation in the game and my belief that we must build the future of Nigerian basketball from the grassroots.
“Development of young talents, access to facilities, regular competitions and mentorship are key to improving basketball.
“As a country, we risk losing promising players if they are not provided with the opportunities needed to develop their abilities.
“We must catch them young, identify their talents and provide the platforms for them to grow.
“The future of Nigerian basketball depends on the strength of our grassroots structures and I intend to ensure we improve on this if elected,” he said.
Abdullahi said he had contributed to grassroots basketball development through the construction of a basketball court and sponsorship of a tournament in Kano.
He also cited the DAM Foundation’s Annual Basketball Championship in Okene, Kogi, held every December, as another initiative aimed at promoting the sport at the grassroots.
According to him, the championship has provided opportunities for young players to compete, interact and gain visibility.
“Basketball is not just about winning competitions.
“It is about bringing young people together, discovering talents and giving them a reason to believe in their potential.
“My vision extends beyond basketball competitions to infrastructure, player welfare, mentorship and empowerment.
“For me, an athlete is not just about a jersey or a number on the court.
“We must pay attention to the person behind the jersey and ensure that players’ welfare is not neglected,” he said.
The ECN director-general said properly built and maintained basketball courts could serve as community assets by providing young people with spaces to train, compete and develop their abilities.
“We need a system that connects talent discovery with competitions, facilities, mentorship and opportunities.
“That is how we can build a sustainable future for basketball in Nigeria,” he said
Abdullahi said his experience in grassroots basketball would contribute to building a system that provided young Nigerians with opportunities to develop their sporting and personal potential.
The NBBF election is scheduled to hold on October 15.
