The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg has issued an urgent security advisory to Nigerians, particularly women and girls, following the deaths of eight women in and around Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg.
The Consulate said the deaths, recorded over about two months, were being investigated by the South African Police Service (SAPS), which has deployed a multidisciplinary team of specialised investigators.
Although investigators have identified similarities in some cases, the Consulate stressed that SAPS had neither established that the deaths were connected nor confirmed speculation that a serial killer was responsible.
Consul General, Amb. Ninikanwa O. Okey-Uche, urged Nigerians living, working, or travelling through Kempton Park, Rhodesfield, and surrounding areas to exercise heightened vigilance.
The warning comes against a wider backdrop of violent crime in Gauteng Province, where SAPS recorded 1,223 murders and 2,369 sexual offences between January and March 2026.
Nigerians, particularly women, were advised to avoid walking or exercising alone in isolated or poorly lit areas, travel in groups where possible, remain alert, vary routines, and use reputable transportation.
The Consulate urged Nigerians to report emergencies to SAPS on 10111, provide anonymous information through Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or call the mobile emergency number 112. Information may also be submitted through the MySAPS application.

The Consulate also warned against circulating unverified allegations on social media and said it would continue monitoring developments with South African authorities.
