Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has opened up about his unexpected journey into music, revealing that his passion for singing began in church despite being raised by Muslim parents.
Speaking during a candid interview with One 54 Africa, the singer said his parents were Muslims, but his father allowed him and his siblings to attend church because he was a liberal man who believed religion was a form of education.
“My dad and mom were Muslims, but my dad somehow allowed us to go to church. He was a liberal man,” Adekunle Gold said.
He explained that attending church introduced him to music, particularly after he became fascinated by the teens choir and developed a strong desire to lead it.
According to the singer, he spent 11 years in the church choir but was never chosen to lead the group because those in charge did not consider him good enough.
“I was in the church for 11 years, and they didn’t think I was good enough to be that guy,” he recalled.
Adekunle Gold said he often wondered what the other choir members had that he lacked, particularly their ability to move and control a crowd. His desire to prove himself pushed him to give his best during rehearsals in the hope that his choir mistress would eventually notice him.
He also revealed that his aunt, who was a choir member, played an important role in developing his singing ability by teaching him how to sing different harmonies.
