Nation, Media Mourn Shocking Death of Dotun Ladipo, Eagle Online Publisher

Shock and grief have swept through Nigeria’s media community following the death of veteran journalist and publisher, Dr. Samson Dotun Oladipo, widely known as Dotun Ladipo, with the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) describing his passing as a major loss to journalism and the nation.
Ladipo, an accomplished editor, publisher, and longstanding member of the Guild, was remembered as a consummate professional whose decades of journalism were marked by courage, intellectual depth, integrity, and commitment to nation-building.
The Nigerian Guild of Editors, in a statement signed by its President, Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, said it received news of the veteran journalist’s death with profound sadness.
The Guild described Ladipo as a “gentleman” whose contributions to Nigerian journalism, particularly his role in the evolution of the country’s digital media space, would be remembered for years.
His death represents another major loss to a profession in which he spent decades working as a journalist, editor, mentor, and publisher.
Ladipo rose through the ranks of newspaper journalism, serving in senior editorial positions before becoming publisher of the online newspaper, The Eagle Online, where he remained actively involved in journalism and the development of Nigeria’s expanding digital news industry.
According to the NGE, Ladipo distinguished himself throughout his career through professionalism, courage, and an unwavering commitment to the fundamental principles of responsible journalism.
The Guild said his work contributed significantly to the development of the Nigerian media and helped advance the growth of online journalism at a time when the country’s news industry was undergoing rapid technological transformation.
Beyond his accomplishments as an editor and publisher, Ladipo was also remembered for his commitment to professional solidarity and the institutions established to protect the integrity and standards of journalism.
His active membership of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, the NGE said, demonstrated his belief in ethical, credible, and responsible journalism as well as the importance of journalists working collectively to strengthen their profession.
“Dr. Oladipo was not merely a media practitioner but also a respected colleague, mentor, and contributor to the continuing evolution of the Nigerian media landscape,” the Guild said.
It described his death as a painful blow extending beyond his immediate family to colleagues, friends, and the wider Nigerian media community.
“His death is a great loss to his family, colleagues, the journalism profession, and the wider media community. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, professional excellence, courage, and service that will continue to inspire those who knew and worked with him,” the NGE said.
The Guild said Ladipo’s contribution over the years had also strengthened its own mission of promoting professionalism and defending the standards and credibility of Nigerian journalism.
It extended condolences to his family, colleagues, friends, and associates, saying the thoughts of editors across the country were with his loved ones at what it described as an extremely difficult moment.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, colleagues, friends, and associates.
“At this difficult moment, our thoughts and prayers are with his family. We pray that God will grant the family the strength and fortitude to bear this painful loss as well as grant the departed journalist eternal rest,” the Guild said.
The NGE added that while Ladipo’s death had deprived Nigerian journalism of an experienced professional, his contribution to the industry would endure through the journalists he influenced, the institutions he served, and the work he produced during his long career.
“May Dr. Sampson Dotun Oladipo’s memory remain a blessing to those who knew him, and may his contributions to journalism endure,” it said.
