The Edo State Government has criticised Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, over his appeal to United States President Donald Trump and the international community to pay attention to the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.
Davido had called for international attention to the election, citing concerns over possible violence, intimidation and interference with the voting process.
Reacting to the singer’s comments, Edo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, described Davido’s appeal to Trump as inappropriate and accused him of venturing into politics instead of focusing on his music career.
Speaking during a press briefing in Benin City, Afegbua said Davido should concentrate on his music and work towards winning another Grammy rather than involving himself in political matters.
The commissioner described the singer’s decision to write to Trump as “arrant nonsense” and defended Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo’s involvement in campaigning for the All Progressives Congress candidate ahead of the Osun election.
Afegbua also dismissed an alleged academic result belonging to Governor Okpebholo that has been circulating online, describing the document as fake. He claimed he had seen the governor’s authentic academic record, which he said showed that Okpebholo holds a Master’s degree.
Turning his attention to Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Afegbua referred to him as a “dancer” and questioned whether there was anything wrong with having a dancer as governor.
“We are looking for votes from Osun. We are telling them to vote for serious-minded people,” he said.
The commissioner maintained that members of the APC had the right to campaign for their preferred candidate and expressed confidence that the party’s candidate would emerge victorious in Saturday’s election.
Taking another swipe at Davido, Afegbua said, “Davido, who should be in the studio to record good music, has become a politician.”
He added that “governance is serious business.”
The exchange comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the Osun governorship election, with Davido openly supporting his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, and calling for a peaceful and credible electoral process.
