Five-year-old Ayomide Omotoso has become one of the major attractions at the ongoing 7th Adegboyega Efunkoya U-15 National Table Tennis Tournament in Lagos.
The tournament is being held at the Indoor Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere.
Omotoso arrived at the venue excited and eager to experience his first national table tennis competition.
In spite of his tender age and small frame, the youngster showed remarkable courage as he competed alongside older and more experienced players from different parts of the country.
Before he was called to Table Seven for his opening match, Omotoso appeared confident and eager to test his skills against his opponents.
However, the pace, power and experience of his rivals proved difficult to handle.
Rather than becoming discouraged, the five-year-old treated each rally as an opportunity to learn, watching his opponents closely and enjoying his time on the table in spite of losing all his matches.
Speaking after his games, Omotoso said he was happy to participate in his first national tournament.
“I am very happy playing because I love table tennis. My dad taught me the game.
“My opponents are far better than me, but I hope to keep training so I can play better next time.”
Omotoso is the son of the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso.
The youngster appeared proud of his participation and excited about the opportunity to compete at the national level.
His presence at the tournament attracted the admiration of spectators, coaches and officials, who praised his courage, enthusiasm and passion for the sport at such a young age.
The tournament is organised by the Efunkoya Sports Foundation in partnership with the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF).
More than 130 players, comprising 82 boys and 54 girls, are participating in the three-day tournament.
Although Omotoso did not record a victory, his enthusiasm, confidence and love for table tennis made him one of the memorable highlights of the competition.
His participation underscored the importance of passion, courage and willingness to learn in sports development, regardless of age.
The competition continues to provide a platform for the discovery and development of young table tennis talents across the country.
