The Delta State Police Command has arrested popular Asaba-based content creator Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over allegations of rape involving a 20-year-old woman who later died.
According to the Command, the arrest followed a petition alleging that the deceased, Favour Agbro, travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after being invited by the content creator, who had reportedly offered to train her in content creation through a programme advertised on his social media platforms.
Police alleged that the suspect lodged the young woman in a hotel, where he sexually assaulted and physically assaulted her. Authorities also said the victim recorded a video before her death in which she alleged that she had met the suspect in an enclosed location, where he requested sex and allegedly raped her multiple times after she resisted.
According to the police, the woman later returned home in a distressed state and narrated the incident to her parents.
The Command further disclosed that the victim’s recorded video detailed the emotional trauma she allegedly suffered following the incident. Police said she later consumed a toxic substance in an apparent suicide attempt and eventually died despite efforts to save her.
Confirming the arrest, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, immediately ordered a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.
“Upon receipt of the petition, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, directed the Area Command, Effurun, to carry out an immediate and thorough investigation into the allegations. Acting on the directive, operatives of the Command swiftly commenced an investigation, leading to the arrest of Ifeanyi Ogbonna, also known as ‘Odogwu of Asaba’,” Edafe said.
He added that during preliminary investigations, the suspect reportedly made statements to investigators and that further inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
A video circulating on social media also shows the suspect kneeling before the deceased’s parents inside a police facility, pleading for forgiveness.
“Please forgive me. This was a big mistake, and I am ready to give up everything,” he was heard saying in the video.
The Commissioner of Police assured the deceased’s family and the public that no aspect of the allegations would be overlooked and that the investigation would be thorough and impartial.
Meanwhile, the case has generated intense debate on social media. While some users have shared unverified claims alleging similar past conduct by the suspect, others have questioned the circumstances that led the victim to honour the invitation. These claims have not been independently verified and remain outside the scope of the ongoing police investigation.
Additionally, older videos of the content creator have resurfaced online in which he allegedly made remarks suggesting that invitations for women to visit him were intended for sexual encounters. The authenticity and relevance of those videos to the current investigation have not been established by the police.
The suspect remains under investigation, and no court has found him guilty of any offence. Under Nigerian law, he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a competent court.
