Sharing the development on social media, Barack Obama praised the Nigerian-born, Los Angeles-based artist and expressed excitement about the unveiling.

“It was great joining Njideka Akunyili Crosby, a gifted Nigerian-born, LA-based artist, to unveil our first portrait together,” Obama wrote.

He added that the artwork captures significant moments from his and Michelle Obama’s journey together and will be displayed at the Obama Presidential Center.

“This piece reflects so many chapters of Michelle and my story, and we’re thrilled that it will be on display in the Hope and Change lobby at the Obama Presidential Centre starting this Juneteenth,” he said.

Njideka Akunyili Crosby is widely regarded as one of the most influential contemporary artists of her generation, with her works exhibited in major galleries and museums around the world.

Her latest achievement has been celebrated by many Nigerians, who view it as another testament to the global impact of Nigerian talent.

Njideka is the daughter of Dora Akunyili, the former Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, who earned national recognition for her fight against counterfeit drugs and reforms in Nigeria’s health sector.
