While Funke Akindele was still basking in the glow of her movie’s historic ₦2 billion cinema milestone, an unexpected moment at the premiere of Aníkúlápó: Season 2 quietly shifted the industry conversation.

During what appeared to be a vote of thanks to guests who attended the premiere, filmmaker Kunle Afolayan made a pointed statement that many interpreted as a call for clarity within the film industry. According to him, there is no cause for competition in Nollywood, as filmmakers do not produce the same kind of content.

He went further, noting that box office figures do not always translate to personal profit. In his words, he does not even desire ₦2 billion at the box office, especially if he would end up taking home less than ₦10 million after expenses.

The comment struck a chord.
What may have been intended as an industry perspective quickly became a talking point among fans of Funke Akindele, triggering debates and subtle online back-and-forth. The situation escalated when Funke took to her Instagram story with a pointed message:
“I am not the cause of your hindrance.”

The tension became more explicit the following day.
In an interview with ARISE TV on February 1, 2026, Kunle Afolayan revealed that Funke Akindele had called him the previous day, expressing anger and asking him to leave her name out of his mouth. According to him, she hung up on him.

What began as a night meant to celebrate cinema and creativity has now evolved into a broader conversation about success, money, recognition, and perceived rivalry in Nollywood.
