Food critic Opeyemi Famakin has come out in defence of popular food creator Chef T following the mixed reactions to her signature jollof rice collaboration with Burger King Nigeria.

Chef T, whose real name is Tolani Tayo Osikoya and who is known for her platform Diary of a Kitchen Lover, partnered with Burger King Nigeria to introduce a signature jollof rice menu.

The launch initially generated excitement among food lovers, but reactions changed after some customers tried the dish and took to social media to express their disappointment.

Some critics argued that the jollof did not live up to the smoky, party jollof flavour many Nigerians have come to expect.

Famakin, who described himself as a friend of Chef T, however, pushed back against the criticism and defended the concept behind the collaboration.

According to the food critic, the Burger King jollof was never presented as an attempt to recreate traditional Nigerian party jollof. Instead, he argued that it was created as a distinct fast food recipe with its own flavour profile.

Chef T and those defending the collaboration have similarly maintained that the dish was designed around a more garlic forward taste rather than the smoky flavour associated with traditional party jollof.

The controversy reportedly became intense enough for Chef T to disable comments on some of her social media posts.

Famakin acknowledged the backlash while standing by his defence of the food creator, adding to the growing debate over whether commercially produced jollof should be judged by the same standards as traditional Nigerian party jollof.

The controversy has since divided food lovers online, with some defending Chef T’s creative approach while others maintain that a jollof rice collaboration targeting Nigerian consumers should satisfy familiar expectations of what jollof should taste like.
