The Edo State Police Command has arrested one Amadin William for allegedly murdering his Europe-based childhood friend, Eghosa Osarietinomwan, during a house-warming ceremony in Oben community, Edo State.
The command’s spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident on Sunday, stating that the killing occurred on December 22, shortly after the victim returned from Europe for the Yuletide and hosted family and friends at his residence.
According to Ikoedem, the suspect allegedly lured Osarietinomwan out of the celebration into a nearby bush path, where he attacked him with a machete.
She said the victim sustained deep cuts to the neck and was rushed to the hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.
Following the attack, the suspect reportedly fled the community and went into hiding. Police later tracked him to Benin City, where he was arrested on December 27.
The killing sparked outrage in Oben community, with angry youths allegedly setting the suspect’s house on fire in retaliation. The police confirmed that two additional suspects have been arrested in connection with the arson.
Ikoedem said investigations were ongoing and assured that all those involved in the killing and the subsequent violence would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
