The Chairman of Ikole Local Government Area in Ekiti, Mr Bayo Omojola, has cautioned residents against indiscriminate bush‑burning in the town as the dry season approaches.
Omojola, in an interview with NAN in Ikole‑Ekiti, said that incessant bush‑burning has serious implications.
He noted that if not properly monitored, it could destroy lives and valuable property.
“I want to warn residents, especially farmers who clear their farms by bush‑burning, to be careful and avoid causing havoc to other people’s property.
“Bushes can be cleared with a cutlass, with the help of gardeners and labourers, but burning bushes without monitoring during the dry season is very dangerous.
“We are heading into the dry season when grasses and trees are especially sensitive to fire, and any fire outbreak without proper measures to quench it can destroy both private and government property,” he warned.
The council chairman appealed to traditional rulers and community leaders to educate their subjects on the dangers inherent in indiscriminate bush‑burning.
Omojola, however, promised to give priority to the welfare of both indigenes and residents of the communities under the local government area.
