Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has questioned the expectations surrounding marriage, saying women bear more of its responsibilities and sacrifices than men.
Speaking during a recent interview, the actor explained that his reservations about marriage stem from what he considers the unequal burden placed on women, particularly regarding childbirth, family expectations and taking their husbands’ surnames.
“I’ve never really been an advocate of marriage, because I feel like it’s more tasking for the woman. She’s the one that bears the child. She takes your last name. A lot of things happen,” he said.
Arukwe also recalled the pressure people face to get married at a particular age, noting that society often questions those who remain unmarried in their mid-twenties.
“Growing up, you’re 25, you’re not married. What’s happening? At this age, I already have five children,” he said, reflecting on the expectations he encountered while growing up.
The actor further observed that attitudes towards motherhood are changing, revealing that he had met women who did not want to have children.
“I feel like now, there are women who don’t even want to have children. I’ve met at least two or three,” he added.
