Nollywood actor Timini Egbuson has admitted that he once considered YouTube movies beneath him, revealing that he now sees the value of a platform he previously underestimated.
The actor made the confession in a post on X, reflecting on how his earlier attitude towards YouTube productions could have limited his opportunities in the entertainment industry.
“Can’t believe I was looking down on YouTube movies at some point. Hunger go don kpai me by now 😂,” he wrote.
His remark has drawn attention to the changing fortunes of YouTube filmmaking in Nigeria, where digital platforms have created more opportunities for actors, producers and filmmakers to reach audiences beyond traditional cinema releases.
For years, some industry observers have drawn a distinction between cinema films and productions released directly on YouTube, with the latter sometimes viewed as less prestigious. However, the growth of online audiences has continued to make digital filmmaking an important part of Nollywood’s business landscape.
Timini’s reflection suggests that dismissing opportunities because of where a project is distributed could mean missing out on work and potential income.
His comments have also renewed conversations about the changing definition of success in Nollywood, as filmmakers increasingly explore different platforms to reach viewers and sustain their careers.
