Nigeria’s Junior Female YellowGreens on Monday recorded a commanding 94-run victory over Malawi U19 Women in the ongoing ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier Division 1 in Tanzania.
Nigeria posted 152 for seven in 20 overs, before dismissing Malawi for 58 in 18.3 overs to secure their second consecutive victory in the competition.
The result is contained in a statement by Zeal Ibe, Media Manager, Nigeria Cricket Federation, and issued to newsmen in Lagos.
It highlighted the team’s impressive batting and bowling performances after Nigeria had earlier defeated Uganda by four wickets in their opening fixture.
According to the statement, Nigeria’s innings was built around valuable contributions from Omosigho Eguakun, Beauty Oguai, Christabel Chukwuonye and Shola Adekunle.
It noted that Eguakun scored 26 from 19 balls, while Oguai also made 26 from 28 deliveries, including four boundaries.
The statement said Chukwuonye, Nigeria’s captain, added a quick 20 from 12 balls, with two fours and a six at a strike rate of 166.67.
It added that Adekunle produced the team’s highest individual score, making 32 from 27 balls, including five boundaries, at a strike rate of 118.52.
According to the statement, Inyene Umoh contributed 17 from 14 balls, while Jennifer Godwin and Jessica Bieni also made valuable late contributions to help Nigeria reach 152 for seven.
It said Nigeria’s bowlers then maintained pressure throughout Malawi’s innings, with wickets falling regularly as the hosts struggled to build partnerships.
The statement noted that Godwin was the pick of the bowlers, claiming four wickets for five runs in 2.3 overs to help Nigeria bowl Malawi out for 58.
It added that Adekunle claimed two wickets for four runs in four overs, including a maiden, while Anointed Akhigbe took two wickets for 10 runs in three overs.
According to the statement, Nigeria reduced Malawi to 31 for five before dismissing the side for 58 in 18.3 overs.
It said Sphiwe Frank top-scored for Malawi with 24 runs, while Shavon Akileni contributed 14, but neither could provide enough momentum to challenge Nigeria’s total.
The statement added that Adekunle was named Player of the Match after contributing 32 runs with the bat and two wickets for four runs with the ball.
It noted that the victory moved Nigeria to the top of Group A with four points and a net run rate of 3.467 after two matches.
The statement said the back-to-back victories over Uganda and Malawi had provided the Junior Female YellowGreens with valuable momentum as the qualifier would progress.
It added that Nigeria had demonstrated its ability to win both a close contest against Uganda and a commanding encounter against Malawi.
The statement said the team would seek to maintain its intensity and build on its performances as it would pursue qualification for the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup.
Nigeria 152/7 (20 overs) defeated Malawi 58 all out (18.3 overs) by 94 runs.
