A 35-year-old man, Precious Orisamakin, on Wednesday appeared before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Isabo for allegedly obtaining N350,000 by false pretence.
Orisamakin, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretence and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Prosecutor, ASP Lawrence Olu-Balogun, told the court that the offences were allegedly committed on Nov. 10, 2025, at Avalon Estate, Kobape via Owode-Egba, Abeokuta.
Olu-Balogun alleged that the defendant fraudulently obtained the money from the complainant, Mr Chinedu Chidera, a food vendor.
He said the defendant, who worked at a nearby factory, was a regular customer at the complainant’s food stand and usually settled his debts at the end of each month after receiving his wages.
The prosecutor said the defendant later requested a loan for his sister’s medical treatment and deposited his mobile phone as collateral.
He alleged that the defendant knew the phone had been purchased on instalment and persuaded the complainant to continue paying the weekly instalments, promising to reimburse him.
“After the complainant paid a total of N350,000 for the phone, the defendant refused to refund the money and blocked all communication with him,” the prosecutor said.
According to him, the offences contravene the provision of Sections 249(d), 418 and 419 of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.K. Araba, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in like sum, who must be a registered bondsman with the Ogun State Judiciary.
She adjourned the case until Aug. 6 for hearing.
