Hong Myung-bo, former South Korea national team coach, is receiving death threats.
This is reported by the South Korean news agency Yonhap . Due to these threats, extra security has been deployed at the airport in the capital, Seoul.
South Korea were in a good position in Group A for a long time, but lost to South Africa (1-0) on the final matchday. That defeat meant the country finished third with three points, which was not enough to reach the knockout phase.
Hong quickly took responsibility and resigned.
There was a great deal of unrest in South Korea due to the country’s elimination.
That unrest also led to threats against Hong. A man reportedly threatened the coach with death. He said he would kill Hong if he returned to the capital, Seoul, with the team.
As a result, the police have scaled up their presence at the airport. 160 officers and 25 security guards are present as the plane carrying the South Korea squad lands at Incheon Airport.
