Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic train accident in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, which claimed four lives and left several others injured.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor described the incident as heartbreaking and unfortunate, noting that the loss of lives represents a painful tragedy for the affected families and the state.
Governor Oborevwori extended his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the crash. He assured residents that the state government had swiftly mobilised relevant authorities to the scene to assist victims and ensure an effective emergency response.
According to the statement, the governor immediately directed the Commissioner for Special Duties, alongside the Chairmen of Ika South and Ika North-East Local Government Areas, to proceed to the accident scene and coordinate rescue operations.
He also commended the prompt intervention of security agencies, noting that the Commissioner of Police was on the ground and had deployed adequate personnel to secure passengers’ luggage and other valuables aboard the train.
Emergency response efforts, the statement added, ensured that injured passengers were quickly evacuated to nearby hospitals for treatment, while survivors without injuries were transported into town for safety. The remains of the deceased were deposited in the mortuary.
To support evacuation efforts, buses were deployed to move survivors and injured persons from the scene of the incident.
Providing an update on the condition of victims, the Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government Council, Hon. Monday Odigwe, disclosed that 35 injured passengers were currently receiving treatment across three medical facilities.
He explained that 13 victims are being treated at Central Hospital, Agbor, 12 at General Hospital, Owa-Oyibu, and 10 at General Hospital, Owa-Alero, adding that arrangements were underway to lift the affected train on Tuesday.
Governor Oborevwori prayed for the peaceful repose of the souls of the deceased and asked for strength for their families to bear the loss. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the safety and welfare of residents, assuring that government would continue to monitor developments and provide necessary support for those hospitalized.
