President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12, 2026, as part of activities lined up to commemorate Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary.
The announcement was made by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) responsible for coordinating this year’s national celebration.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, said the President’s address would be one of the major highlights of the Democracy Day events approved by the Federal Government.
Akume noted that Democracy Day remains a significant moment in Nigeria’s history, providing an opportunity to honour the sacrifices of citizens and pro-democracy activists who fought for the restoration of democratic governance.
He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle, particularly the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose contributions continue to symbolize the nation’s democratic journey.
According to the SGF, the annual commemoration also offers the government a platform to showcase efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national development despite prevailing economic and social challenges.
With less than two weeks to the celebration, Akume urged members of the committee to commence work immediately to ensure a successful outing.
He stressed that the activities planned for this year’s Democracy Day would reflect the prevailing national mood while remaining consistent with the administration’s commitment to prudent management of public resources.
The Federal Government has approved a series of events leading up to the June 12 anniversary.
The programme includes a World Press Conference on June 4, special Juma’at prayers on June 5, and an inter-denominational church service on June 7.
Other activities include a Democracy Day Public Lecture scheduled for June 9 and youth- and women-focused programmes on June 10.
On June 12, President Tinubu is expected to deliver a nationwide broadcast in addition to addressing the National Assembly, while the celebrations will conclude with a Democracy Day Gala Night.
