Nollywood actress Bolaji Ogunmola has opened up about the challenges she faced at the beginning of her acting career, revealing that she was often stereotyped because of her appearance.
Speaking during an interview with content creator Jay On-Air, the actress said she was repeatedly boxed into certain character roles during a time when light-skinned actresses were more dominant in the industry.
According to Ogunmola, being dark-skinned and curvy caused many filmmakers to limit her to “side chick” roles instead of giving her more diverse opportunities.
Despite the typecasting, the actress said she remained focused on improving her craft and stayed consistent until she was able to break beyond the limitations placed on her in Nollywood.
Her comments have since sparked conversations online about colourism, body image and stereotyping within the Nigerian film industry.
