Nigerian dancer and singer Korra Obidi has stirred fresh controversy following remarks made during a recent interview, where she took aim at the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, describing it as “cult-like” based on her personal experience growing up in the ministry.
Speaking candidly, Obidi recounted her formative years within the church, alleging strict lifestyle restrictions that, according to her, included bans on television and computer use, aside from approved religious materials authored by the church’s founder, William Folorunso Kumuyi.
In what appeared to be the most personal part of the interview, she linked her eventual detachment from the church to a family tragedy. Obidi stated that her mother died of cancer, adding that the inability of the church to heal her marked a turning point for her father, after which the family abandoned those strict limitations.
Her comments have since sparked mixed reactions online, with critics questioning her characterisation of the church, while others have pointed to her account as part of a broader conversation around religious upbringing and personal freedom.
