A growing debate has emerged online after a mother raised concerns on TikTok over a passage in her toddler’s school textbook.

In the video, she read out a story about an old man who left a piece of meat in the care of his dog. After a thief stole the meat, the man, unaware of what truly happened, punished the dog the next day by inflicting harm on it.

The disturbing nature of the story quickly caught public attention, with many Nigerians questioning its suitability for young children and calling out the author.

The author, Mr Ayengbe JB, has since responded, pushing back against the criticism. In a media interview, he dismissed the outrage, stating that many Nigerians are quick to react emotionally without seeking context. He added that he has been teaching long before his critics and does not feel obligated to explain himself.

According to him, stories like this were common in his generation, and he sees nothing wrong with the passage. His response has only deepened the divide.

On one side are parents calling for more sensitivity in children’s educational materials. On the other are those who believe older storytelling methods, even when harsh, carry lessons that should not be erased.
