The Federal Capital Territory witnessed heightened political activity this week as former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, took his campaign trail to several area councils, injecting fresh momentum into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the forthcoming FCT council elections.

Obi’s engagements in councils including Abaji and Kwali drew large crowds of residents, party supporters and onlookers, with scenes of street walks, market interactions and impromptu rallies dominating the campaign stops. The turnout and intensity of the engagements triggered widespread reactions within and beyond the FCT, particularly on social media.

Reacting to the campaign, social commentator and political activist, Isaac Fayose, described the scenes as evidence of sustained grassroots enthusiasm around Obi’s political message. In a post circulated online, Fayose wrote: “Humongous crowd turns out for Peter Obi during FCT council poll campaign. It’s Peter Obi or nothing. E go loud.”

In a follow-up comment, Fayose said the chants and turnout reflected growing public demand for accountable leadership, adding that the energy around Obi’s appearances showed that his appeal had not diminished since the 2023 elections.

During his interactions with residents, Obi urged voters to take the area council elections seriously, stressing that governance failures at the grassroots level often cascade into national problems. According to reports from the campaign trail, Obi emphasised people-centred leadership, fiscal discipline and accountability, telling supporters that “good governance must begin from the grassroots” if national development is to be sustained.

Supporters at several stops echoed pro-Obi chants, while ADC party officials described the former governor’s involvement as a major boost to the party’s visibility in the FCT. Some party figures noted that Obi’s decision to campaign for council candidates underscored his belief that local government elections are critical to strengthening democracy.

Political observers say Obi’s presence has effectively transformed what is usually a low-key local contest into a high-interest political event, drawing attention to long-standing issues of infrastructure deficits, service delivery and citizen participation in the FCT’s satellite communities.

So far, there have been no reports of official obstruction or disruptions linked to the campaign outings, as events were largely peaceful and focused on voter mobilisation.

Analysts say that as the FCT Area Council elections approach, reactions to Obi’s campaign trail indicate that his involvement has not only energised ADC supporters but reinforced his continued influence in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
