Stanley Nwabali put up an outstanding performance as the Super Eagles No 1 goalkeeper at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, but he will need a stiff challenge for that position, according to former international Victor Ikpeba.
“The Super Eagles need more competition for places to keep every player on his toes,” demanded the 1997 African Player of the Year Ikpeba.
“We can start with Nwabali as we need two great goalkeepers in the squad as was the case in the past.”
Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye turned down the chance to be at the last AFCON after he insisted he will not play second fiddle to Nwabali in Morocco.
Francis Uzoho and Amas Obasogie were the other two goalkeepers at the AFCON.
Ikpeba further described the Super Eagles as “work in progress” after they finished third at the AFCON.
“They are still a work in progress, they reacted well when they failed to qualify for the World Cup,” he remarked.
“They had more time to train together, scored a lot of goals and looked good when they went forward.”
