The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) moved yesterday to re-energise its structures and rally its lawmakers as part of a broader push to relaunch itself into national reckoning ahead of the 2027 elections. National Chairman Tanimu Turaki, speaking at a strategic meeting between the newly inaugurated National Working Committee (NWC) and PDP members of the National Assembly, reaffirmed the party’s renewed commitment to internal democracy and fairness.
Turaki told the lawmakers that the new PDP leadership was determined to run an open, transparent, and inclusive organisation capable of winning back Nigerians’ confidence. “I want to assure Nigerians, especially PDP members nationwide, that we will listen and respond to their needs promptly and transparently,” he said.
“There will no longer be room for impunity, manipulation, or favouritism. Nigerians will be allowed to aspire and achieve their goals. PDP is now a true party.”
Describing the meeting as pivotal, Turaki underscored the critical role of the National Assembly caucus in the party’s comeback strategy. “Together with members of the National Assembly, we will transform Nigeria through the instrumentality of the PDP,” he declared.
Speaking on behalf of the Senate PDP caucus, Sen. Abdul Ningi praised the NWC for the engagement and expressed confidence in the party’s renewed direction. He noted that the PDP has both the capacity and the resources to return to power if members remain loyal and focused.
“We know the issues in PDP are man-made. Man-made problems require man-made solutions. The challenges are solvable,” Ningi said.
He cautioned those attempting to reduce the party’s relevance to a single electoral cycle, reminding them of the PDP’s foundational role in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
“Our thinking is beyond 2027. Anyone seeking to terminate PDP over 2027 issues is not aligned with our values,” he added.
The Minority Whip of the House of Representatives, Ali Isa, also pledged the caucus’s cooperation with Turaki’s leadership, stressing that lawmakers remain committed to protecting Nigeria’s democracy. He urged Nigerians to support the PDP, insisting the party has the experience and institutional grounding to strengthen democratic governance.
The NWC later held a separate session with the party’s ex officio members to discuss strategic priorities as the PDP intensifies efforts to reshape its internal structures and reclaim a central place in national politics.
