Kosofe Local Government Council in Lagos State has embarked on massive evacuation and desilting of drainages and canals across its communities to tackle flooding and promote environmental sustainability.
The Executive Chairman of the council, Mr Moyosore Ogunlewe, disclosed this in a statement issued yesterday in Lagos.
Ogunlewe said the large-scale exercise, which covers all six wards in the council, is aimed at preventing clogged drainage systems and mitigating flooding during the rainy season.
“The desilting activities are being carried out simultaneously across the six wards, with over 15 communities’ drainages currently being cleared,” he said.
Ogunlewe explained that the initiative was part of the council’s broader environmental programme designed to combat environmental degradation and improve public health.
“This exercise is not just about cleaning drainages; it’s about protecting lives, properties, and the environment.
“We are working systematically to ensure that no community is left out,” he added.
According to him, the council’s ongoing work covers communities such as Awolowo Canal in Oworo, Oworo Road Phase II, Surulere Street, Olabode Aluko Street, Onabanjo Street, Ireku Street, and Salawu Oriola Street, all in Oworo.
Other locations include Moshalashi Street and Association Close in Ogudu, Dagunro Close in Ojota, Adeola Street in Medina Estate Ifako, and Omoyele Pratt Glory Estate in Ifako.
Ogunlewe appealed to residents to complement the council’s efforts by maintaining proper waste disposal habits and avoiding dumping refuse into drainages.
“We urge our people to stop disposing waste indiscriminately into drainages. Such actions negate our efforts and are a major cause of flooding in our communities,” he noted.
The council boss reaffirmed the council’s commitment to sustaining a cleaner, healthier environment for residents.
Ogunlewe said, “Our goal is to make Kosofe flood-free.
“This desilting effort will be continuous and extended to more communities in the coming weeks.
