Team Nigeria at the ongoing Union of Africa Karate, (UFAK) Championship in Abuja have started with great result, winning 1 gold, 2 bronzes and 2 silvers as the championships get underway.
Meanwhile, President of the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN), Hon. Silas Ali Agara said Nigeria, who expressed excitement over the team’s brilliant start, said the country has the capacity to host different international sports championships.
Agara, who is the 4th Vice President of African Karate Federation, stated this at the opening ceremony of the Championship, tagged: “Abuja 2025” at Velodrome, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
He said, “Team Nigeria has started with good results, as we won 1 gold, 2 bronzes and 2 silvers. This is the first time Nigeria is hosting this championship and the first amongst West African countries, it is really tasking, but we are up to the challenge.
“I received a call from President of UFAK, Mr. Souleymane Gaye, if Nigeria could host the championship, I answered in the affirmative, I am happy with the Federal Government of Nigeria, National Sports Commission and stakeholders for their support towards the success of the championship”.
The former commissioner for sports and the immediate past deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, urged participating countries to compete according to the rules, ensure safe contest and win medals to further qualify for World championships.
Agara said he is happy that the karatekas have noticed the peace and hospitality of Nigerians.
In his speech, the President of UFAK. Mr. Souleymane Gaye said, “I am happy that Karate Federation of Nigeria, (KFN), is hosting this year’s championship. This is a big opportunity to attract more karatekas.
“I am happy that I have been re-elected as President at the Abuja Congress. I thank the management, officials, athletes and stakeholders.” Said Souleymane Gaye.
In his remarks, Chairman of National Sports Commission, Alhaji Shehu Dikko, said the NSC wouldn’t relent in the development of sports to greater heights.
