Nigeria’s Flamingos yesterday conquered the world after defeating Japan 2-1 in a breathtaking final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Rabat, Morocco, becoming the first African nation to lift the prestigious trophy.
In an extraordinary display of grit laced with emotion and national pride, the coach Hakeem Busari tutored youngsters delivered the performance of their lives to write their names in Nigerian and African football history.
Awawu Bashiru, who had already established herself as one of the tournament’s outstanding performers, opened the scoring in the 39th minute following an attacking move involving Mary Dunstan.
The goal gave Nigeria a precious advantage heading into the interval, sending the Flamingos into the dressing room just 45 minutes away from football immortality.
But the Nigerian girls were not prepared to leave anything to chance.
Barely two minutes after the restart, Oluebube Umejiaku doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 47th minute, finishing an opportunity created by Esther Stephen to send Nigerian supporters into wild celebrations.
Japan, the 2014 world champions, refused to surrender and mounted a determined fightback.
Their persistence eventually produced a goal in the 80th minute through Fuki Ito, setting up a nerve-racking final ten minutes as the Japanese youngsters desperately searched for an equaliser.
However, Nigeria’s courageous defenders stood firm, protecting their slender advantage until the final whistle confirmed an unforgettable 2-1 triumph.
The victory completed one of the most remarkable journeys in the history of the competition.
After suffering an opening defeat to Poland, the Flamingos responded with six consecutive victories, overcoming Puerto Rico, defending champions North Korea, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil and finally Japan to claim the ultimate prize.
For Bashiru, the final provided another unforgettable moment after her spectacular brace against Brazil in the semi-finals, taking her tally to three goals across Nigeria’s final two matches.
Captain Azeezat Oduntan and her teammates have now surpassed the country’s previous best achievement of a bronze medal in 2022, transforming Nigeria’s long-standing World Cup ambition into reality.
The historic success also represents a major breakthrough for Nigerian women’s football, offering fresh inspiration to young female footballers across the country who dream of representing their nation on the international stage.
For Busari, the triumph is the ultimate reward for his belief in a young squad that refused to surrender after its opening setback.
From the heartbreak of their opening defeat to the unforgettable celebrations in Morocco, the Flamingos have delivered a triumph that will inspire generations of young Nigerian girls.
Nigeria are world champions, Africa has a new football history, and the Flamingos have written their names in gold!
