Senegalese-American singer and entrepreneur Akon has challenged the widespread belief that fame in the music industry automatically translates to wealth, arguing that many artists are financially struggling despite their public image and popularity.

Speaking during an interview with Hip Hop Eye, the singer explained that artists are often the most visible figures in the industry but are frequently among the last to receive significant financial rewards from the business.

According to Akon, while the music industry generates substantial revenue, much of the money is earned by professionals working behind the scenes rather than by the performers themselves.

“In the music industry, the artist is the last to get paid. He is the broke one but he is the most famous. If you want to be broke and famous, be the artist,” he said.

The singer noted that individuals seeking greater financial success within the entertainment industry should consider career paths beyond performing, highlighting opportunities in music production, songwriting, management, talent representation and legal services.

Akon explained that many of the industry’s highest earners operate behind the scenes, where they are able to maximize their earnings without necessarily enjoying the same level of public recognition as artists.

“If you want to make real money, go to other sectors of the music business,” he added.

His remarks have sparked conversations online, with many fans and industry observers debating the realities of fame, wealth and the financial structure of the modern music industry.
