Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has defended Nollywood’s use of traditional themes, supernatural storylines and dramatic visual effects, stating that African filmmakers are simply telling stories rooted in the continent’s culture and beliefs.

Speaking during a conversation with British Nigerian radio presenter Remi Burgz, the actress responded to criticisms that some Nollywood productions are often mocked because of their special effects and spiritual themes.

According to Iyabo Ojo, African storytelling cannot be separated from local traditions, spirituality and folklore, which naturally influence many Nollywood plots.

“Well, it’s Africa, and we have to tell our story the way it is, no matter how much we want to westernise it or modernise it. There are voodoo in Africa, and they work,” she said.

The actress further argued that filmmakers should not be ashamed of portraying African realities and imaginative concepts on screen, adding that Nollywood’s creativity lies in its unique storytelling style and cultural identity.
