The technical committee of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has invited 40 pugilists for the final phase of its 2026 Commonwealth Games camp in Lagos.
Mr Mathew Okugbe, NBF Director, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, released to journalists in Lagos.
Okugbe said the boxers are mainly finalists from February’s National Boxing Open Trials, comprising 20 males and 20 females across all weight categories.
He added that official invitation letters had been sent to selected boxers, coaches and other technical officials.
The camp opens on May 1, when boxers are expected at the Lt.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah (retd) Boxing Hostel, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
Training sessions will start on May 2, immediately after the athletes’ arrival.
Chairman of the NBF Technical Committee, Mr Babatunde Laguda, said the federation was ensuring optimal preparation for the Glasgow Games.
“The NBF board, led by Mr Wale Edun, has prioritised early camping for every international competition.
“Hence, the federation has taken the lead in inviting athletes early ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
“This phase is crucial because from the 40 boxers, 10 will emerge to represent Nigeria in Glasgow, Scotland,” Laguda said.
NBF Vice President, Mr Omonlei Imadu, said only medal prospects would make the final squad.
“The current leadership is determined to change the narrative, with a new merit-based selection model for international competitions.
“It is about hard work and quality. The National Sports Commission has given us a clear mandate ahead of the Games.
“We must deliver and ensure only deserving boxers make the final list for Glasgow,” he said.
Nigeria will field 10 boxers at the 2026 Commonwealth Games scheduled from July 23 to Aug. 3 in Glasgow.
