Michael Adetiba, a professional long-distance runner from Kwara State, on Saturday emerged victorious in the inaugural Akohun Drum Festival marathon held in Luda-Ajara, Badagry.

Adetiba won the 20km race, organised by Chief Jesuyon Avoseh to mark his seventh anniversary as Baale of Luda-Ajara.

The event started from Luda-Ajara and looped past the Badagry Local Government Secretariat twice.

Adetiba, who beat 19 other participants, was awarded a cash prize of N80,000. Daniel Ilubode from Lagos State was second, and Paul Akoteyon from Badagry was third.

Adetiba expressed his gratitude and determination shortly after the race, dedicating his win to his supporters and coach, and acknowledging their role in his success.

Adetiba said he discovered the event on social media.

He said, “I was very determined to win, and I give God the glory that I was able to achieve that. I want to appreciate the organisers for this opportunity.”

Chief Avoseh said the marathon was a warm-up for the main Akohun Drum Festival on Monday.

He said the festival is aimed at showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Ogu people and fostering international relations.

“We will be having Akoto and Akohun Drum groups from all communities in Badagry and even groups from the Republic of Benin.

“This is not only meant to promote Badagry culture but also to develop a good relationship between Nigeria and Benin Republic.

“The grand finale of the festival is expected to host the kings of Ajara Kingdom along with several high-ranking dignitaries and cultural ambassadors,” he said.

According to Avoseh, the festival will continue throughout the week, featuring a vibrant blend of percussion, dance, and communal celebration.
