The Southwest Security Stakeholders’ Group has called on the Federal Government and state governors to urgently strengthen collaboration to tackle worsening insecurity across the region.
Rising from an emergency meeting, the group stressed the need for coordinated action among all tiers of government, traditional institutions, and security stakeholders to curb the growing wave of violence.
In a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Ireti Adewole, the group said it was deeply alarmed by the increasing frequency of security breaches across the South-West.
The body, led by the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, comprises several groups, including the Oodua People’s Congress, Agbekoya Society, Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Professional Hunters Association, and other grassroots security networks.
It expressed concern over recent incidents, including the rape and murder of an 85-year-old woman in Ido, Ibadan, whose body was later deposited at Adeoyo Hospital, as well as the killing of a traditional ruler, the Alagamo of Agamo in Akure, Ondo State.
The group also cited cases in Ekiti and Kwara states, warning of possible incursions by extremist elements into the region.
According to the stakeholders, the surge in violent attacks, kidnappings, and banditry is threatening peace and stability, while a viral audio message allegedly issued by terrorists warning of planned attacks after the Ramadan fast has heightened fears.
The group, however, warned that it was prepared to confront any such threat, insisting that security agencies and local networks must act proactively.
It emphasised that the current situation demands a unified front, stronger intelligence sharing, and deeper community engagement to stem the tide of insecurity and restore confidence across the South-West.
